Stoke folk approve of centre design Kate Russell Designs for a $6 million community centre in Stoke have been given the thumbs up by local residents, who say that the facility will create a positive “focal point” for the suburb. The new venue, to be built at Greenmeadows Park, is what deputy mayor Paul Matheson calls “part one of the jigsaw for Stoke” and will be home to both community and sporting facilities. It will feature a main hall, function and “breakout” rooms, kitchens, offices, changing rooms, and storage space for rugby, tennis and cricket clubs.

The concept design plans for the facility, which have been designed by Nelson architects Jerram Tocker and Barron, were unveiled to the Stoke Seniors last Wednesday by Paul Matheson, who says that they thought the design was “very good”. “They liked the plans, but they were also concerned with functionality of the building, such as if the toilets were in the right place and if there was enough disabled parking,” says Paul. Plenty of ramps and somewhere to store mobile scooters were also a high priority for the seniors and Paul says

Not only was the day a chance for on lookers to admire a display of American automobile history, the Independence Day Cruise

was also in support of a very good cause. Everyone who took part in the cruise paid an entry fee of $5 and by the end of the day the event managed to raise $500, which will all be going towards prostate cancer. There were 67 participants in the cruise, 64 from Nelson and a further three that were picked up in Motueka.

Members of the Stoke Rugby Club, who are helping to fund the facility, are also happy with the design. Stephen Fitzgerald, who has been part of the club since he was five years old, says that he thinks it’s great. “It’s a good overall design for the Stoke community, and great for the rugby club to have a proper space.”

Stoke business owner Mary-Jane Bailey of Lemon Tree Lane is also impressed with the design. “It’s nice, I quite like it,” she says. “I think it’s going to make a focal point for Stoke, which we don’t have. The whole place is so disjointed at the moment.” Across the road from Greenmeadows Park, at the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, shop keepers Jacky Evans and Ann Heppell were also enthusiastic about the plans. “I quite like the look of it, it’s probably what Stoke really needs,” says Jacky. “As long as there are plenty of ramps,” adds Ann. During the meeting, extra features were added to the design, which have now pushed the original $5.6 million budget over $6 million. “We want to add a bifold door to split the main hall into two so it can be a flexibile space, and we are also adding a photovoltaic solar power generator” he says. “This will push the budget over $6 million, but we want to get it right.” A cafe for the facility was also debated. “There is room for a cafe to go in, but it hasn’t been greenlighted,” says Pete. The potential cafe site will be used as a meeting room for the meantime.

High demand for houses House prices have risen only slightly as real estate agents report huge demand for homes in Nelson and Tasman. Mark Rumsey of First National says they’ve seen huge growth over the past 12 months, with his firm selling three times as many homes in the past fortnight, compared to what they did last year. “What we’re seeing is unpresented demand, especially in the $280,000-$440,000 price range,” he says. The QV House Price Index for June shows Nelson residential property values rose by 0.7 per cent over the past three months and the average home value in the city is now $413,239. However, Tasman District home values rose 1.2 per cent year on year and they are now 3.4 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007. QV Nelson Registered Valuer Richard Kolff says sales numbers and listings continue to fall around the region which is quite normal for this time of year as we hit the middle of winter.

“Recent decreases in the Official Cash Rate and floating interest rates by some banks, coupled with an outlook of continued low interest rates, is also helping to fuel demand for homes in the low to medium level price brackets,” he says. Richard says there have been regular reports of large numbers of buyers turning up at open homes of new listings, often resulting in multiple offers being received. Mark expects prices to rise sharply this spring. “An increase in demand usually brings an increase in price and we haven’t seen that yet. As we come into spring I think we’ll see multiple offers drive prices up.”

The two men have been charged with assault with intent to injure. Police said further charges are likely. The complex houses about 180 people and has around 60 security cameras installed. Nayland students mixed on new uniform rules Kate Russell

Mufti is soon to become a thing of the past at Nayland College, with the school board voting to phase in uniform for its senior year 11 and 12 students over the next three years. The decision was announced last Tuesday, and means that year 11s will be required to wear uniform in 2017 and then year 12s in 2018. A review of the year 13 mufti regulation will also come under review for 2018. The board made their decision based on a number of surveys and consultations, designed to gauge the view of the wider Nayland community. Principal Daniel Wilson says the decision-making process had been in the public eye for a very long time. One hundred parents from Nayland College’s main feeder school, Broadgreen Intermediate, were asked for their opinions along with parents, staff and students, at the subject selection evening last

year. He says uniform was one factor parents sitting on the fence took into account when selecting a school. “There was some really telling information in that survey, around parents who made up their mind not to send their student to Nayland and why they had chosen that.” The school also conducted a uniform survey of 306 students last year. “There was only a minority of students in that survey who wanted to have a uniform, however the comments in that survey were quite telling around the students who did want to move to uniform and the reasons around that,” Daniel says. Philip Sanderson, a year 10 student at the school, says that senior mufti is one of the reasons why some people come to Nayland College. Nayland’s year 11 students have been allowed to wear mufti since the 1990s. Year 12 and 13 students have not worn uniform for a number of years prior to that.

Rainbow opens with a bang Spectacular

Hundreds took to the snow over the weekend as Rainbow Ski Area held its opening weekend celebrations. Saturday was jam packed with snowball fights, tours, tobogganing, sledding and live music entertaining a crowd of hundreds, and while Sunday was quieter, there were still plenty of people on the slopes for some wintery fun. Rainbow Ski Area manager Jono Hay says the weekend ran without a hitch. “We’ve had an excellent opening weekend with fresh snowfall on Friday morning. Final piece of Saxton Field being developed Simon Bloomberg

The final piece of the puzzle in the Saxton Field development is being put into place with construction starting on a new sports ground that will include the region’s first dedicated rugby league field. Contractors have already started removing top soil from the five hectare site, located between Avery Field and Saxton Oval, so that the drainage system can be installed. The former Daelyn Orchard site is the final piece of land within the greater Saxton Field complex to be developed and, when completed, will feature open playing fields including a home ground for the Richmond Rabbits Rugby League Club.“We’ve spoken to the Richmond Rabbits about it and they are very excited,” Tasman District Council reserves officer Glen Thorn says. “We have developed other council grounds for other clubs like Jubilee Park for the rugby and cricket, so it’s nothing new.” Glen says the TDC-owned land is being developed as a part of a joint project with the Nelson City Council. Because the site is adjacent to the Saxton Velodrome, which is presently being constructed, and Avery Field, a shared toilet block will also be part of the development.

“There will be an ablution facility that will service Saxton Velodrome, Avery Field and the new sports ground, although the velodrome will eventually get its own facility. There could also be shared clubrooms for the three sports that makes more sense than having three separate clubrooms that aren’t fully utilised.” Glen says the construction of a new ablution block will be a relief for football teams and their supporters at Avery Field. “They’ve been using Porta-Loos there and some of them got burned down, so this will be good news for them.” Glenn says the sports grounds will be sown with grass in late August and open for use in time for next winter’s sports. The league ground will have relocatable floodlights for night-time training in winter that can be removed in summer. The ponded area to the north of the ground and vacant area to the west will be landscaped to create a family recreation area and attractive entranceway. The entrance to the new ground will run between the new entrance to Saxton Field off Main Rd Stoke and Champion Rd. “It’s going to transform the whole area from a wasteland of weeds that people were using for fly-dumping into a really nice sports ground. It’s going to look amazing.”

Murder trial earns detective commendation Andrew Board

When Pip Greenland took on a complex murder inquiry last year she wasn’t yet a qualified detective, but she handled it like a pro and in the process sent the accused to jail and received a district commanders commendation for her work. Detective Pip Greenland was awarded the commendation at a Nelson Police Pay Parade at the station on Friday. She was one of seven officers to receive an award, along with three non-sworn staff. She says she was handed the murder inquiry early in the investigation and led it right through until after the trail that saw the accused found guilty of manslaughter of her husband and attempted murder of her daughter-in-law, and sent to jail. “It was complex because they were arguing whether she was insane,” says Pip. “I had a feeling all along that there was something not right. Everyone said ‘oh no, she’s crazy, let’s go with it’ but I thought there was something in it and I didn’t believe she was insane, and that she was just a really good actress.” The case started with around 60 witnesses that needed to be interviewed, along with managing suspects and victims. “The trial was a great result really and this award is great recognition, and nice because I did most of the work on it myself.” Other awards included a 35 year service

clasp to Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney and Detective Sergeant Christ Roberts; a 28 year service clasp to Detective Sergeant Ian Langridge; a 21 year service badge to Tracey Ball; a 14 year service badge to Patricia Lenting and Marion Price; a 14 year long service and good conduct medal to Senior Constable Jude Yeoman; a certificate of service to ex-Senior Constable William Squires and a diploma in police workplace practice to Constable Micaela Rolton.

The Nelson Ark is taking its dogs on the road as part of the Healing Species programme that is aimed at encouraging empathy and compassion in school children. The Ark already runs its successful APART programme that links unwanted dogs with atrisk youths at its headquarters at Stonehurst Farm in Hope. But the group is taking a second programme called Healing Species into schools to benefit a wider cross-section of students. Ark trustee and co-founder Karen Howieson says the group’s other co-founder, Susan Murray-Rifici, studied the programme when she was on a teaching fellowship in the US in 2008. Susan introduced the programme to a small number of Nelson schools, including Broadgreen Intermediate where she used to be a teacher, but now the Ark wants more schools to sign-up for Healing Species. “APART is limited to a small number of children and we wanted to help a wider range of young people,” Karen says. “It helps create a positive culture in the classroom and encourages empathy among the students.” Karen says they have just trained Rebecca Verity and Daniel Mortimer to deliver Healing Species at schools. It was piloted in Broadgreen and Nelson College for Girls this term and will be trialled at Parklands School next term. The Ark is also negotiating with Waimea College and Brooklyn School about delivering the programme in their schools. Karen says one of the keys to the success of Healing Species is the presence of a rescued dog as an “assistant teacher” in the lessons. All the dogs that go into the classroom have completed the APART programme and their story helps encourage trust and empathy in the students. Broadgreen year 7 and 8 teacher Craig Maybee says all of his students have been enjoying the programme which is “very engaging”. “The dogs really make it work well. It’s been great and the kids have enjoyed it - it also brings a really calming effect into the classroom.” Student Ben Stewart says one of the things he learned from the programme was that people can overcome all sorts of obstacles with a little help. “It’s been really cool. It’s nice to see a dog like Spike, that hasn’t had a good start in life, turn out so good.” The programme consists of nine to 11 weekly classroom lessons.

A petition universally signed and supported by all persons contacted in the Maitai Valley has been submitted to the NCC declaring the frustration of the locals and informing the NCC about the ‘Blackspot Grant Scheme’. School is fun and games for Birchwood kids Forget playstation and computers - last week Birchwood School students showcased the best in handmade entertainment at their Games Gala. The event was the grand finale to the schools current focus on technology. During the topic, classes looked at how technology impacted on their lives, and took part in some practical technology problem solving activities. To bring the topic to a close, every class designed and constructed their own games, applying some of the techniques they had learned throughout the unit. New-comers to Nelson are encouraged to head along to Rhythm and Brown this Wednesday to meet new people and socialise. The Nelson Newcomers Network hosts various events in the city, including the monthly get-together at the New St bar.

Coordinator Howard Fairbank says he was pleasantly surprised when he turned up to his first meeting. “There were a diverse range of people, both in age and backgrounds. People were there from their 20s to their 50s and from North America, Europe, Asia and from other parts of New

Zealand.” But the nights aren’t just for those from outside of the region, locals are also encouraged to come along for “diverse entertainment”. “This event is specifically designed for people who are keen on networking and socialising, although the first

Students make braille books for blind St Paul's School Vinnies have created a special gift for vision impaired people in Nelson, making a tactile children's story book featuring words in Braille and large print. The Vinnies, which is the youth group of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, were inspired to create the book after a visit from Gill Clayton and Kaye Halkett, who spoke about their experiences with sight loss. Gill and Kaye showed the Vinnies examples of tactile books and the children decided to make their own to donate to the Blind Foundation. The Vinnies transformed the children's story Whirly the Helicopter, written by Ian Pillinger, into a tactile book featuring 3D illustrations with words in both Braille and large print. The Vinnies presented the book to Gill,

Kaye and Amanda Stevens, who is also vision-impaired, and Paul Richardson, from the Nelson branch of the Blind Foundation, to be used by vision impaired people living in the region. "I'm a blind parent with sightedchildren and there was nothing like this around when my children were young," Gill says. "It is so important for any parent to be able to read to their children." Amanda says tactile books are also good for vision-impaired children and are a key resource for helping develop their literacy while Paul says the Vinnies created "one of the best tactile books I have seen in my years of working in this field". The Vinnies also buddied up with young people with disabilities and their caregivers to go canoeing and created musical instruments for Little Stars playgroup that caters

for children with disabilities as part of the study. "The children learned so much from this project," Phillipa says. "It's helped the students to reach out to and value all people for the unique qualities they are able to offer."

Vinnie Josephine Hills says the book is "much more than something people can read". "If you are blind and a Braille reader it is much better if you can touch the pictures as well. It's something they can really enjoy."

Koha Shed gives Nelson a helping hand

Money is a dirty word, and ‘sharing’ is the motto at Nelson’s Koha shed, which opened its doors last Tuesday. The shed, which is being run out of a volunteer’s father’s garage in Stoke, is a place where people can come and receive donated goods at no cost. The only payment required is a smile. Organiser Cara Christall says that it all started when a post was shared on the ‘Pay it Forward Nelson’ Facebook page to see if anyone would be interested in starting a local shed. Cara, along with three other dedicated volunteers, put their hands up and decided to give it a go. The following weeks were spent

shed hunting and putting the word out for donations. “The response has been huge,” says Cara. “We’re seeing all sorts of people donating stuff. I think people find a real richness in giving.” Cara says the shed is all about providing free goods for “anyone and everyone.” “This is a place where anyone can come and get what they need – there is no taking involved. Here, it’s all about sharing. When you think about it, it’s such simple concept,” she says. The organising committee has started a Facebook page to get the word out,

which has already hit more than 1000 likes. “We’re blown away by the support. We were doing a happy dance at 48 likes - we had no idea it was going to be this big.” For the Koha shed to continue to grow, a new location is crucial. “Our immediate concern is finding a more suitable space,” says Cara. “We need somewhere bigger, drier, and with more parking spaces. Somewhere in Victory would be ideal.” The shed is located at 556 Waimea Road, Stoke and is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 11am – 1pm.

Quest Nelson is the newest property for Quest Serviced Apartments and an exiting new accommodation option for Nelson’s visitors of business or leisure. From the start of construction in July last year, it’s taken a bit over nine months to get to the finished article which was opened on Monday, June 22. The design and build of the apartment block premises was down to Wellington based company, Arrow International, although project manager Robb Noble says that 90 per cent of the resources that delivered the project came out of Nelson. Construction of the building has taken some interesting turns however, thanks to the innovation of Arrow International and the local team of consultants and sub-contractors, it’s now open for business. “It’s obviously a five level building which is a fairly substantial structure for Nelson,” says Robb. “When we

EnginEEring gEologist joins Davis ogilviE

Engineering geologist, Andrew Smith is the latest recruit at Davis Ogilvie’s office in Nelson. The Nelson office has been keen to add the geotechnical and environmental engineering disciplines to its established structural engineering, civil engineering, surveying and planning services, and Andrew’s appointment fills the gap. Originally from the United Kingdom, Andrew is an experienced engineering geologist who has worked on a number of geotechnical and contaminated land projects in Nelson over the last five years, as well as many around the country and the world. “The opportunity to join Davis Ogilvie came at exactly the right time for me and I took the chance to join a developing team which is providing a robust one-stop-shop service to local residential and commercial developments. “Being part of a new structural, geotechnical and environmental team at DO and to become actively involved in the local market is a great challenge. The range of work is interesting and it’s a great learning environment.” Andrew’s inclusion in the team comes as Davis Ogilvie consolidates its Nelson base with the recent addition of both a contract Geotechnical Engineer and Structural Draughtsperson. Rock n Roll dancers off to compete in Chch Four rock 'n' roll dancers are heading south to showcase their swinging dance moves at the South Island Interclub Rock 'n' Roll challenge this weekend. Cindy Verry and Clara Jones will compete in the open section of the same-sex category, while Deb Corbett and Andrew Aldridge have entered the novice section. All four dancers are a part of the Sun City Rockers club, which is based at Club Waimea. Clara says it’s the first time all four of them have entered the competition, and the first time in several years that Nelson dancers have competed at the challenge. “Cindy and I both entered the club champs here in Nelson a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it so we thought about entering this. But none of the guys wanted to do it so we thought we’d dance together,” she says. The same-sex category does bring about some challenges. Clara says she had to learn a new role and they don’t do as many lifts and dips because she doesn’t have the strength to throw Cindy around. “For me, I was so used to doing the female role and then I had to learn to do the lead role – opposite to what I was used to. That was quite hard.” The duo hope to earn enough assessment points to qualify for nationals in Wellington later

Nelson win back Noel Barton Trophy Andrew Board Noel's home. Galbraith Nelson put in its performance of the season to beat championship leaders Waimea Old Boys and win back the Noel Barton Trophy at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. It's been a tough year for Nelson, with plenty of losses sparingly broken up with the odd win. Its dismal record means that they have not qualified for the Car Company Nelson Bays division one semi-finals this weekend. But at home on Saturday, Nelson got its hands on one piece of valuable silverware in the final minutes. Boosted by Super rugby stars, Nelson beat the championship favourites, 28-26 with a dropped goal minutes from full time from David Havilli. Nelson coach Kade Heke says it was a huge team effort. “It felt like everyone on that field gave it everything they had. We didn’t pick a man of the match, everyone played well.” Kade says the Noel Barton is a special trophy for the club. “Noel was a big driver for us once we knew our season was over. Noel epitomises what it is to be a Nelson

club man.” The current management also has plenty of connections to the name on the trophy. He is Kade’s great uncle and a godfather to assistant coach Andrew Goodman and manager Stuart Damon. “We celebrated it pretty hard on Saturday night. It was a special win.” Kade says while the win ended Nelson’s season on a high, the overall campaign has been disappointing. “We were so close in so many games, and it’s disappointing that we didn’t put us in a position to push for a place in the semi, but hopefully we’ll have most of our young guys returning next year.” In the other games, Stoke were humiliated 100-3 by Kahurangi with the referee even having to call the game eight minutes from full-time to end the romp. Wanderers had a strong 26-7 win over Marist in Brightwater, and the two sides will meet again in this weekend’s semi final at the same venue. Waimea Old Boys will host Kahurangi in Richmond in the other semi final. Both games will kick off at 3pm this Saturday.

Dash for Cash helps fuel motocross champs

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Well, the weathers been a bit random, but its amazing how many folk can find time off nowdays if there is a good weather pattern during the week to head up to our winter fishery up around Durville Island area. Sometimes there is more boats up the top mid-week than on a fine weekend. With this added pressure on the fishery, it is important to consider catching and releasing these wonderful fish for our future stock. Lots of smaller Kingfish have been caught recently, and the odd bigger models too. Snapper are also on the bite, and some good winter condition, means there are some 6lb fish, along with some huge schools. Groper have been accessible in the right conditions and tides for those

Jacob Chandler The revving of engines echoed out of 88 Valley as around 150 motocross riders took to the Nelson Championships at MotoX Park over the weekend. Traditionally, the Nelson champs were held yearly but the event was held off last year due to low organisation numbers. This year, a bout of new memberships drew racers from all over New Zealand. Motocross New Zealand steward Heath Botica says the Nelson event had a large amount of money up for grabs as cash prizes which helped to set the it apart from the rest of the country. "A lot of the guys have done quite well out of it a lot more that what they would have got had they competed in other parts of the country." Heath says the championships catered to junior and senior classes as well as a ladies race. Racers as young as ten could enter the competition. Reece Walker took out most of his races after stepping up to a senior level from a junior level racer. “He rode really, really well,” Heath says. Reece failed to take out the Dash for Cash race loosing to Hayden Wilkinson who was on a bigger bike. The Dash for Cash puts racers head to head in pairs in a one-lap knockout with a $500 top prize. Heath says there were only a few minor incidents and he hopes the event has created a greater interest in the sport. “We had good spectator numbers, it’s a new lot of organisers that have taken it on and it was run really well. Once the word gets out about how much prize money was up for grabs, they might get a bit better supported."

The first round of the Championship Round was played on Saturday at Saxton Stadium, and Stoke PowerSigns got off to a shaky start before beating Jacks Lime 21-19. With a reversed seeding draw, margins could be expected to be significant, however relegated Stoke PowerSigns and promoted Jacks Lime had only two goals separating them at full-time in the grade one encounter.
